11 Steps to Start a Walker’s Legacy Collegiate Chapter

Walker’s Legacy is a global platform for the professional and entrepreneurial multicultural woman. We exist to inspire, equip, and engage through thought-provoking content, educational programming, and a global community. We strive to level the playing field by ensuring that, when it comes to business, you are not alone.

Often times on campus, young entrepreneurial college-age women do not have an organization they can connect to that will help themselves and others grow. Walker’s Legacy Collegiate Chapters allows you to foster a network of like-minded multicultural women and promote professional development on your campus.

Check out these 11 easy steps to creating a collegiate chapter on your campus.

Step 1: Get Started

Contact collegiate@walkerslegacy to receive a Collegiate Chapter Toolkit from Walker’s Legacy.  

Step 2: Make the Boards  

Find at least seven (7) classmates who want to uplift multicultural women on your campus in entrepreneurship and professional development. These women will help form your executive board and assist your start of a Walker’s Legacy Collegiate Chapter. The positions available are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership, Newsletter Editor, and Marketing & Public Relations. You may also choose to create more positions.  

Step 3: Gather Members

Have each member of your executive board find at least five (5) people willing to join the chapter and participate in chapter meetings, events and activities by signing up with their first name, last name, email address and cell phone number. There is no minimum member requirement for the Walker’s Legacy Collegiate Chapters.  

Step 4: Find a Faculty Sponsor

Find a faculty member willing to sponsor and advise the chapter. Good qualities to look for a faculty advisor are administrators that are that are sympathetic to advancing entrepreneurship and professional development for multicultural college-age women and in the fields of business, marketing, entrepreneurship, and economic departments.  

Step 5: Write the Constitution

Draft a chapter constitution, which will state the chapter’s mission, purpose and govern activities such as elections and officer duties.   (Sample constitution & bylaws are included in the Collegiate Chapter Toolkit)  

Step 6: Make the Chapter

After applying for the positions, establish the Walker’s Legacy Collegiate Chapter through the Walker’s Legacy National Team.  

Step 7: Contact Us

Contact the Walker’s Legacy National Team to receive your organization’s email account (yourschool@walkerslegacy.com). After the creation of an email account, create a Facebook Fan Page, Twitter account, Instagram account, and email listserver.

Step 8: Become Official

Apply to become an officially recognized student group with your school’s administration.

Step 9: Plan your chapter’s first meeting

Pick a location, date, time and set an agenda. It’s also good to have an interesting, motivational speaker and light refreshments at your first meeting.  

Step 10: Recruit

Hold a recruitment table on campus to promote the first meeting, expand your chapter’s membership and sign up more students involved in the Collegiate Chapter!

Step 11: Congrats, You Did It!

You have successfully established the Walker’s Legacy Foundation Collegiate Chapter at your institution. Start hosting events on your campus to and will start receiving National newsletters, email updates, news, event invitations, and access to the Walker’s Legacy & the Walker’s Legacy Foundation resources.

Walker's Legacy is a growing global women in business collective founded to establish networks of empowerment and access for women of color in business.
