Rocking a crown of stars and a toga-like dress, Lady Liberty stands tall and patriotic. But, there is one difference: she’s African American.
The 225th anniversary Lady Liberty coin will be represented as an African American women for the first time in history in 2017. The historical 24 karat gold coin represents a value of over $100.
The Department of Treasury said in a statement, “We boldly look to the future by casting Liberty in a new light, as an African-American woman wearing a crown of stars, looking forward to ever brighter chapters in our Nation’s history book”.
Future releases of this coin are expected to include all forms of other ethnicities; Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Indian- Americans. The future goal of the coin is to showcase the melting pot of America. Of note to the historical significance of this representation, -the only other coin featuring women of color is the “Sacagawea” figure currently on the one-dollar coin.
