Walker’s Legacy is proud to observe Native American Women’s Equal Pay Day – #NativeWomenEqualPayDay.

You may recall that April 4, 2017, was National Women’s Equal Pay Day.  This day represents the extra labor time required to close the wage gap experienced by women to that of their white male counterparts – 78 cents to every $1, respectively.  For Native American women the income gap is even wider representing 58 cents to the dollar. September 25th, 2017, represents the additional nine months Native American women must work to reach wage parity with their white, non-Hispanic male counterparts.

Further, similar to African American and Hispanic communities, research has shown that Native American women are more likely to be single heads of household, therefore women’s income inequality directly impacts economic opportunities for children, families and Native American communities throughout the country.

According to the National Women’s Law Center, thirteen states have wage gaps for Native American women who are estimated to lose one million dollars over the entirety of their careers.

These states with the largest wage gap include:

  1. Virginia
  2. Texas
  3. New Jersey
  4. Delaware
  5. California
