The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the philanthropic fund created by Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan, has recently hired a Chief Financial Officer. Former PayPal VP of Human Resources, Peggy Abkemeier Alford, has been chosen to fill the role as announced by Zuckerberg last week.
The University of Dayton alumna has formerly worked with eBay and Rent.com. While at PayPal, Alford was additionally responsible for a number of teams in finance and operations. In her new role at The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Alford will be responsible for managing the Initiative’s financial books.
I’m excited to work with Peggy to take on these challenges and build a better world for children everywhere.Mark Zuckerberg, Chairman and CEO, Facebook
The organization, which will give away a vast majority of the Facebook fortune, has already made investments in causes such as education reform and affordable housing since its founding in December 2015.
“One of the biggest challenges running a large philanthropic initiative is measuring results and deciding how to invest capital across different disciplines,” said Zuckerberg. “For example, how do we know whether we’ll have a greater impact investing more into personalized learning to help students today, or long term science research that could cure diseases in the future, or advocacy for important issues like immigration reform?”
He went on to share, “Peggy joins us from PayPal, where she has led a number of teams in finance, operations, and human resources.”
