Ithaca College announced Dr. Shirley M. Collado will be the institution’s next President. This makes her the first Latina president in the college’s 125-year history. Dr. Collado is also a professor in the college’s psychology department. Prior to this appointment, she served as the chief operating officer at Rutgers University- Newark.

Dr. Collado’s own success is a testament to her drive, education and the power of mentorship. One of the reasons she was able to thrive in college was due to the Posse Foundation where she was a part of their inaugural class. The Posse Foundation “identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes”.

This lead her to Vanderbilt University where she founded the Vanderbilt Association of Hispanic Students and the Sexual Assault Support Group. She received her undergraduate degree in human and organizational development and psychology from Vanderbilt University in 1994, followed by MA and Ph.D. degrees in clinical psychology from Duke University.

She works as a clinical psychologist with a specialty in trauma among multicultural populations at the intersection of race, ethnicity, and gender. She has also taught at several universities and colleges including New York University, Georgetown University, George Mason University, the New School, Middlebury College, and Lafayette College.

Dr. Collado’s latest appointment continues to inspire her colleagues and students. Nicholas Zeppos, Chancellor of Vanderbilt University said “I know that she will do amazing things. Let me also offer congratulations to the scholarly community of Ithaca College. You have made an excellent choice, and you will soar to new heights as you work with Dr. Collado.”

Dr. Collado additionally serves as a trustee and officer of the Board of Trust at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she chairs the Academic and Student Affairs Committee. She is a member of the Executive Committee and Campaign Committee and recently completed a membership on the Land Use Committee.

On her own ability to shatter glass ceilings, she said

“It is difficult to be the first, to open the doors, either as an individual or as an institution, but it’s necessary.”

We hope to see Dr. Collado lead Ithaca College to even greater success.
