During this divisive political climate in the U.S., it is crucial for the rights of Americans to be protected, especially women. Fatima Goss Graves, the president of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) has played a crucial role in this.

In July of this year, she started as the first Black woman president of the National Women’s Law Center. Although this appointment is new for her, she has been working with NWLC for a little over a decade. Prior to her work at the National Women’s Law Center she worked at Mayer Brown LLP and Mayer, Brown, Rowe, & Maw LLP as an associate. She received her B.A. from UCLA and her J.D. from Yale Law School. In addition to her work at NWLC, she also serves as an advisor for the American Law Institute Project on Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct on Campus and was on the EEOC Select Task Force on the Study of Harassment in the Workplace and a Ford Foundation Public Voices Fellow.

Goss Graves has centered her career around advocating for women and girls, with issues such as security, health, reproductive rights, education access, and workplace fairness. She has published articles relating to these topics, including A Victory for Women’s Health Advocates, National Law Journal (2016) and We Must Deal with K-12 Sexual Assault, National Law Journal (2015), and reports like Unlocking Opportunity for African American Girls: A Call to Action for Educational Equity(2014), Reality Check: Seventeen Million Reasons Low-Wage Workers Need Strong Protections from Harassment (2014), and 50 Years and Counting: The Unfinished Business of Achieving Fair Pay (2013).

Fatima Goss Graves told The Washington Post “I don’t think we have ever faced a point when all, and I do mean all, of our issues, seem to be under attack at once,” And while the current political state of the country leaves us all anxious about the future, it is reassuring to know that people like Fatima Goss Graves continue to advocate for the rights of all Americans.
