“[The movement] began by individual acts of courage by hundreds of women and some men, too, who came forward to tell their stories of harassment and assault.”Edward Felsenthal, editor-in-chief, TIME Magazine

TIME Magazine named the women of the viral #MeToo Movement as its ‘Person of the Year’ in the 91st edition of the highly-anticipated annual recognition of the world’s most influential figures.

Featured on the current TIME cover are actress Ashley Judd, singer Taylor Swift, former Uber software engineer Susan Fowler, California lobbyist Adama Iwu and strawberry picker Isabel Pascual. Originally created in 2006 by activist and girls advocate, Tarana J. Burke – who is notably absent from the cover – the #MeToo social media hashtag has greatly amplified the topic of sexual assault and the stories of its survivors.

Revered as the “Silence Breakers,” these women are acknowledged for publicly sharing their personal stories of sexual misconduct at the hands of their male counterparts in the workplace, consequently advocating for the fair treatment of women (and men) who experience this type of abuse.

The galvanizing actions of Judd, Swift, Fowler, Iwu, Pascual, and hundreds of others have acted as catalysts of what TIME editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal calls “one of the highest-velocity shifts in our culture since the 1960s.”

The hashtag, popularized in part by actress Alyssa Milano, has been used millions of times and in over 80 countries in the wake of the many men in Hollywood, media, business, and politics accused of inappropriate behavior toward their colleagues.

Featured in this edition TIME magazine are interviews of the dozens of people in an array of industries who have brought their unfortunate experiences to the forefront. President Donald J. Trump and President Xi Jinping of China are each recognized as the runner-up and third ‘Person of the Year’ on the list produced by TIME.
