On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Walker’s Legacy in partnership with Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, Google, and Wells Fargo hosted National Entrepreneurship Summit and $5K Pitch Competition in Houston, Texas. The Summit took place at the Hewlett-Packard Enterprise offices and connected over 100 multicultural women business leaders to discuss the best resources available to fund and grow women-of-color-owned businesses.
The content-packed event featured two industry expert-led panel discussions, a featured address, and the first PROSPECTUS $5k Pitch Competition and was led by the Mistress of Ceremonies, Sophia Beausoleil of KPRC Houston News.

Alongside the day’s events, the Houston Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) Business Center provided free one-on-one coaching sessions that allowed aspiring and existing business owners to engage with their plethora of services.

The summit’s first panel, How I Made My First Million: Scaling Business Profits discussed strategies successful women entrepreneurs have used to grow and scale their ventures from promising startups, to endeavors that will prosper within the industry. Our experts included Helen Callier, President, Bradlink, LLC; Maria Rios, President & CEO, Nation Waste, Inc.; Zawadi Bryant, Founder & CEO, Nightlight Pediatric Urgent Care; and was moderated by Ashley Small, President of Medley, Inc.

Directly following was the Summit’s second panel discussion, From Bootstrap to VC: Strategies for Funding Your Venture, a dynamic conversation about utilizing various strategies for funding your small business including traditional loans, bootstrapping, crowdfunding, and venture capital. The panel was moderated by Marguerite Williams, Vice President & Senior Relationship Manager at Wells Fargo and featured Rashanna Moss, Founder, Moderna Muse and Owner, Pure Barre; Lydia Evans, CEO, SW&G Essentials; and Angelica Garcia, President & CEO, AIM Global Logistics.

Finally, the summit concluded with the PROSPECTUS Pitch Competition. The peak of the Walker’s Legacy 10-week online accelerated business development-training program, the competition featured 5 finalists and awarded Still Going, the first-ever app that connects its user with live, on-demand guided meditation coaches founded by Starr Barbour $5,000 in prize funding to expand her innovative venture. Bytenack, the e-learning platform that allows children to learn computer science, computational thinking and coding founded by Anasofia Monteblanco, additional won $1,000 in prize funding from She Is a CEO Foundation.
