Success Profile: Valerie Jarrett, Public and Private Sector Power Player

Former Senior Adviser to President Obama, Valerie Jarrett, is taking her talents to Lyft as the newest member of their Board of Directors.

An experienced civil servant and business woman, Jarrett’s background includes serving as President Obama’s Assistant for Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs as well as Commissioner of Planning and Development for the City of Chicago and Chair of the Chicago Transit board. She’s also dedicated time to working on national economic growth and advocating for working class families. Currently, Jarrett sits on the board of Ariel Investments and is an advisor to The Obama Foundation.

Lyft co-founder and CEO, Logan Green, said, “Valerie is one of our country’s foremost leaders and a distinguished public servant, and a natural fit for our board.” Co-founder and President, John Zimmer, added, “From day one, Lyft has been shaped by our core values that focus on service to our communities of drivers, passengers, and team members.

“Valerie shares these principles, and has a perspective that will push Lyft forward as we work to improve people’s lives with the world’s best transportation.”

Jarrett said, “[John, Logan and I] share a belief that reliable, affordable transportation positively impacts social mobility and improves the quality of life in densely populated communities. I am thrilled to join the ride.”

Valerie Jarrett’s commitment to quality service in both the private and public sectors seem to make her a perfect fit for the Lyft culture and guarantee that she’ll continue her work to help others in this new position.

Chanté Russell is a Howard University print journalism major from Raleigh, North Carolina. Her entire life has been shaped by her passion for writing, fashion and activism. Those passions have led her to create a blog entitled Be The Zeitgeist and serve as a staff writer for Howard’s student newspaper, The Hilltop. She has also written for Lady With Attitude and worked as a freelance journalist. Some of her biggest role models include Anna Wintour, Maya Angelou and her cousin, Dr. Jennifer Edwards, who inspired Chanté to attend Howard. After completing college, Chanté hopes to work as a fashion journalist and use her platform to combat cultural insensitivity within the fashion industry and improve the public perception of the industry.
